This is so much easier to accomplish in one high school town. Sadly, this type of HS engagement needs to work more efficiently in the technological age. With the advent of social media, kids tend to want to play with their friends and where they will be noticed (for a winner). The adage if you ball, they will call doesn't hold the same weight as it once did.

This is awesome for Damascus and shows why they are sustainably successful, but it’s tough when in other areas there is massive pull to privates or a consortium where 8 middle schools could choose. Would be great to have better feeders right to HS like Damascus has, but youth ball gets good players by promoting private schools and don’t push the public route as much.

They do the same thing at Urbana and Linganore to include camps and other methods to get them ready for high school.

Dmass has had a number of players opt for Good Counsel over the years. Let’s not pretend they haven’t.

With the advent of social media, kids tend to want to play with their friends and where they will be noticed (for a winner). Problem is that that trickles down to the youth level. All the best youth players typically play together and to play with their friends from youth ball, that means playing at an elite private school.

That’s a better reason to do this. What does it take to visit eight schools at lunch time? Eight days. Isn’t that worth building a program? Some coaches just don’t make the efforts others do.

Most coaches visit the middle schools to meet with the 8th grade students.
That being said, Damascus certainly has a unique situation for Montgomery County. It is a true "town" with a feeder program and kids who generally grow up and matriculate through the feeder schools from K-12.
The rest of the county just is not set up for the same formula for success. Eight MCPS schools are in consortia, meaning that the youth and families won't know their middle school until midway through their eighth grade year and come from a multitude of middle schools. Most of our high schools have split middle school articulation.
Very few of our communities have the infrastructure in place to have successful feeder systems that produce students from K-12. Our communities overlap and have become very transient - families moving in and out.
It is great that Damascus is able to have synergy with the youth programs and its feeder middle (and many of the Frederick/Carroll and rural communities as well). But your implication in your post seems to be that Damascus' staff does things the right way and other staffs don't. There is more to it than visiting a middle school, and I am sure you know that.

That's just not true. I would imagine most, if not all coaches (or athletic directors) visit the feeder middle schools at lunch.
